external hard drive issues - Will not mount, not recognized either.
My Linux Server will not recognize my new external hard-drive. It definitely works. Tried it on another system. I tried Mounting it manually and setting it to automatic mount and rebooting... Nothing. I'm fairly new to Linux. Someone please help!

What OS do you have? What do you get in /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog when you plug in the drive?
|
What filesystem type(s) do you have on the drive, partition structure. What command did you use to try to mount it?
|
If it's formatted NTFS, that might be the problem. Not all distros include NTFS drivers by default.
I know that Debian doesn't, because I had the same problem when I got an external USB drive. Rather than get the NTFS drivers, I just reformatted it ext3, since I expect never to plug it into a Windows machine. |
Thanks for responding. I found the info I needed elsewhere on this board. I was looking to erase this thread. However I was having trouble with that too. lol

It is good etiquette to tell is what you found, where and how it solved your problem. When your problem is solved, please use the thread tools on top of this thread and mark your problem as solved
