Excessive File Lock Issues in Centos 5 Samba

We're running Samba on Centos 5. We have 35 clients. When a user attempts to open an Excel spreadsheet stored on the server, a message box is displayed saying the file is in use and can only be opened in Read Only mode. This happens 75% of the time and due to the way we assign work, it is highly unlikely anyone is opening a file that is in use. Any ideas?

You could try turning oplocks off.

While stumbling around for a solution to a samba problem recently, I came across a post that mentioned sharing problems when two types of user are accessing the same share. i.e. if a user is logged in to a share and a guest is also using that share. It apparently "locked" any files for one of the users. (Un)fortunately, it wasn't the problem I had, so I moved on and don't have a link to give you.

I'll check that out 'smoker'. I read some other posts around the 'net' that talked about 'oplocks'. Thank you.
