error in accessing Tape drive


iam using hp dds-4 40 GB data catridge c5718A tape drive..
i googled and got many command for using on tape drive.
but i didnot got commnad for getting memory of tape drive.
also when i run command it error


root@localhost]#tar -xvf /dev/nst0
tar: This does not look like a tar archive
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Archive contains obsolescent base-64 headers
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

iam able to erase and copy data into TD but not able to restore data from TD to pc.
how did i copy it into /home
