I am still working on this problem with no progress

I am still working with the problem of not being able to get my samba working. I have tried several different setups and they are not work. Here is a link to a forum that I have found several references to on the internet. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2389. Then there was the three links that LinuxCrayon gave me and they didn't work either. I have even gone to samba.org and looked at there website and I was not able to get that to work either. I seams that in all of these setups I get to a part were I don't have a program or can't find a program or the command does not do what it is supposed to.

I am able to ping my desktop. I found another way to do it. I was not able to get the ping working the way sydney-troz told me to. I know that there I must be over think this or something I can not image that it would take a week plus of messing around to get this to work or no one would be using this software.

Problems with each walk through I have tried:
http://www.jonathanmoeller.com/screed/?p=181 (I went through the walk through completely and I didn't do anything.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ad17kma8rNM (When I tried this one it got to the step of clicking on shared folder under places [I think] and I don't have a shared folder. I believe this is for an older version.)

http://swik.net/Samba+Tutorial (I went through only one that I found the looked like would be the most appropriate and nothing happened.)

Going to the Network Servers finds that there is window network and mshome but when I click on it, it finds nothings.

I tried to insert the info in the config file at the end but nothing happened. I don't know if I need to enter it in anywhere else.

I have been able to get my xp to see my laptop using the workgroup workgroup but it won't find it if I change it to mshome. It can see the laptop but it says that I don't have permission to access the drive. From here I am lost I have even tried to get it to work on my own with configuring the conf file but I was not able to get it myself either.

Please Help. Thank you.
