Question Email, postfix and MX record woes

I am not sure if this would be better placed in "Newbie" since I am kind of a Linux/server newb, so if it seems a bit too elementary, I hope an admin will move it.

Anyway, I am trying to set up a website and want to be able to send mail through python using my domain name, as well as being able to forward received mails to my gmail account.

So I set up postfix and was able to receive mails sent from gmail instantly (checking with "mail" command). But when I enabled mail forwarding nothing happened (I used this guide):
http://www.binarytides.com/postfix-m...arding-debian/

I searched and searched and couldn't find a solution, so I assumed that the problem was with my DNS settings and made some changes. 12 hours later the forwarded mail does show up in my gmail inbox though, so it did work, just very slowly. Now I am in the unfortunate situation that I don't remember exactly how the DNS records were set up at the time the forward was sent, so I can't really post that here. But also I don't want people who sign up to wait 12 hours before being able to confirm their mail address (assuming sending a mail through python would also take 12 hours to get through to the inbox).

I am normally the type of person who likes to test things out a bunch of times and fail 10 attempts before I figure out how stuff works and can create something with it, but this waiting about 12 hours for each try kind of breaks this way of working, especially when you want to keep your project moving forward.

I really hope someone can help, any thing you know or any input is you can contribute with will be very much appreciated.

Update: So I just spent a full day pretty much trying to figure this out and got my MX records in order. I can receive email instantly, but it seems I cannot connect to mail hosts like gmail on port 25 for some reason. Any ideas as to why that might be?

Your ISP might be blocking that port. If your ISP has SMTP server, use it as relayhost.
