Easiest Linux Distribution for Home Server Set-Up

I have been given an older Windows 2000 server in an older Compaq desktop box and would like to set up a server that would allow my friends to access files, videos, etc. that I put on it from the web. I have looked at Ubuntu, Mageia, CentOS, and various BSD's but the task seems daunting. Any suggestions, advice, would be appreciated. A distribution with easily understandable step by step installation instructions is what I am looking for. Thanks for any help. Michael

By the sounds of it, you would want an ftp server, you could follow this for ubuntu:

If you do that after installing the server version of ubuntu, it should be pretty straight forward.

It's not Linux, but FreeNAS is really user friendly
