I don't like to be a naysayer, but why whould you want to do that? If you don't partition your drive, it means that either OS can stomp all over the files that may be essential to the operation of the other OS...That's BAD.

Download an ISO of gpartd (Google is your friend, or try http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...kage_id=271779 ), burn the CD, boot the system with the CD you created and resize the partitions. When you reboot Windows, you will get a slightly unusual boot the first time as the OS does a checkdisk, but after that it should work fine. At the same time, you have an "empty" partition that you can load Linux onto.

When you load Linux, because the XP OS is already present, the Linux Installer will detect the other OS and will write the MBR and configure the boot loader (GRUB) so that you can select the OS you start into.

HTH

The short answers are:

if you don't have any free space on the drive, you can only do it by running Windows as a virtual system or adding more disk space.

What has this got to do with servers though?

Who said anything about a server?....

BTW, I noticed I had made the mistake of assuming that Windows was on the box and Linux was to be added. That works.

What may not work reliably is trying to add Windows to a Linux installation. My experience is that you are better off loading Windows first, then letting Linux detect its presence, and install "around" windows. Linux plays well under these circumstances, and I've done this many times successfully. It may just be the way I have done it, but trying to add windows onto an existing Linux box, with or without partition, is that Windows has dumped all over the Linux and taken the box as its own

This is the server part of the forum, hence the assumption it is to be used on a server.

That's a fair point! I just pulled it out of the "Zero Replies" queue, so hadn't seen the classification, but I see your point and agree totally

I would recommend putting them on separate drives if at all possible as it removes many of the issues with making Linux and windows play nice.

Then all you need to worry about it grub /lilo and ntldr working together.

You can use ubuntu to install on ntfs now (or so they say) but please dont.
