dovecot error

hey guys,

I installed dovecot 1 and everything was working fine while using the passwd file as a userbase, but I want to create a web interface to manage users/domains and would prefer to have mysql as the userbase.
When I login via telnet i get

* OK Welcome To Your Mail Server
1 login mark@dom mark
* BYE Internal login failure. Refer to server log for more information.
Connection closed by foreign host.

the username, password and domain are correct. The server logs do not look like they are being written to.. I've got /var/log/dovecot and /var/log/dovecot_info and neither have any new added to them..
