Does "back in time" work on a vps

Hi there

I want to use the software "back in time" which is based on rsync on my vps.
i wonder how the software copes with the hardware beeing virtualized,
also can "back in time" copy every file eventhough its just in use by the OS ?

I would be realy happy to understand this
i need a reliable GUI backup software for my server to fully revert to an earlier state or just pick some files

thank you

hello maxbaum,

>>Back In Time is a simple backup tool for Linux.

It provides a command line client 'back in time' and a Qt5 GUI 'backintime-qt' both written in Python3.

>>You only need to specify 3 things:

1. where to save snapshots
2. what folders to backup
3. backup frequency (manual, every hour, every day, every month) so it should be working on VPS.

hope this helps you

not realy I have read this already, of course.

You know in practice things tend to not go as well as the manual tells you.
So i came here, because I thought maybe someone has real life experience with rsync in gerneral or backintime on a vps.

but thanks

I use rsync extensively with virtualized servers (vmware and Citrix XenServer) and physical servers (HP DL360/DL380 etc.) and have never encountered a problem. rsync works with the filesystem and not directly at hardware level.

I haven't used "back in time" as I've been a "dirvish" guy for many years but if it's using rsync then there's no reason it shouldn't work just fine.

As you've neglected to say what distribution you're using and what virtualisation platform I can't 100% tell you it'll work for you though. Try it and report back your experience.

I too have had no problems using rsync-based utilities (rsnapshot) on virtual servers. As TenTenths says, the nature of the hardware should not be a factor. As was also said, try it and see what happens...or give us more information about your setup.

Wow thanks to everybody Im glad to hear some experiences about rsync

My dist willbe CentOS 7, but for the vps im not certain yet.
so with rsync i can:
1.take a complete snapshot x of a running machine
2.revert my vps to that snapshot x while running
3.go to a completly different vps and revert/morph it to snapshot x
??? =

if this was the case, this would be indeed super awesome
