dhcp client not working

i have a DHCP server on RHEL AS 4. which is directly connected to a RHEL ES 3dhcp client by a cross cable.
on both the pc iptables is off.
the client has been configured to use DHCP.
BUT while booting the eth0 of client cant be activated. gives error "check link" like that. i have tried configuring through gui, but no success. it works only when i run "dhclient" command from client. works fine. so, i have put the command in rc.local. and its working.
BUT THIS IS NOT THE WAY IT SHOULD WORK. the dhclient daemon is not getting started on boot. i have checked 3 to 4 good books. nowhere i have found this kind of awkward issue.

thanx in advance

It seems that maybe the order of startup scripts may be incorrect. I would check the logs to see exactly what went wrong during bootup. Check /var/log/messages to see the logs for bootup messages. This may help in diagnosing the problem.
You may want to use the chkconfig --list and see on what init level each daemon starts. /etc/init.d/network should prolly be the first script you should check and then see what calls are there and in what order they are processed.

Andy

i checked network script. but its beyond my level of comprehension.
in all the script there is no mention of dhclient.
what can the problems be if i continue to run dhcp client by putting the command in rc.local ?

Absolutely NONE. I know it's not the normal method and it should start alone but there is absolutely no (bad) side effect while running it from rc.local
