determine needed internet speed for hosting server and domain
I have just completed my own server and domain for my website and tested it locally. Now I am wondering about the needed speed for my internet. I don't want to start it up and have it crash. I have verizon fios which is currently 10 down 2 up. Is this enough, or do I need to upgrade my plan? Or is there a way to calculate needed speed? Thank you for your help in advance.
How much traffic are you expecting and what type of traffic (i.e. people just browsing pages, people downloading large files, etc.)? Even moving the server to a colo site may be something you want to look at, although 2Mbps is quite a lot for a personal web server. You may want to try something like speedtest.net at various times during the day / week to see what kind of speed you can get during different time periods.
Well for now it will be for a personal site in which I am still working on. I am guessing low to moderate traffic. However I do plan to eventually host for others sites. I am just using my website as a learning tool for an idea of what to expect in hosting for others. So to give you an idea I have a little over a tb of space and will eventually add more. I'm really just looking for a way to calculate what is needed as I progress. I have never done my own system like this, and have no formal training on the subject so I don't know what to expect.
Oh, and as for the type of traffic I plan to try different things as I go so I can learn more about it. I have been playing with linux for awhile now and am comfortable so far. So I will be testing it in various ways to teach myself as I generally do.
It pretty much is trial and error. Start out with what you have. If things get dicey then plan to upgrade your plan.
I've run a very small website on my home computer just fine. People downloading tracks from my band and such. My only problem was slow internet for me because of bandwidth being chewed up. My system has never crashed and it is like 6-8 years old.
