Debian Apache2 protected directories

hello

i have a debian server with apache2 running on it. i would like to setup protected directories on a couple of sites it's hosting, could some1 tell me how to do this? or point me in the right direction?

What does 'protected directories' means?

so apache will ask for a username/password for certain directories for a site.

seriously though anyone got an answer????
