Unhappy Dead on Network and No signal on monitor. - CentOS - 5.5

Hi !

We have a quad core Intel Xeon E 5410 processor running on recently installed centOS 5.5 . Machine can't be pinged all of sudden and when we switch on the monitor, no signal on it, even no response on keyboard.

We thought the problem accorded with abrupt temperature changes, is it so ?. But we have similar machines running efficiently under same temperature conditions.

with queries,
rajesh.

Ok...so what exactly should we tell you?? All you've told us is you have a machine, and it's down. How about telling us what you've tried/done? Have you tried to reboot it? Power cycle it? Check the connections? Power supply? Anything?????? What leads you to believe it's temperature related? Machines can overheat and shut themselves down, but obviously when they cool off, they can be restarted.

Thanks "TBone", excuse me for keeping things vague.

We took following actions upon Inactivity.

1. We check the network cables, replaced them, tried another ethernet ports. But things r same.

2. We did regular power cycles, neither did it work.

3. We checked /var/log/messages, which had no entry regarding system.

That's how we are proceeding through the problem, may be you can suggest us some improvement.

with thanks,
rajesh.

What you've said doesn't make sense. You say you can't get in the machine, and power-cycling wouldn't bring it back up....but you checked the system logs?? How??

Thermal shutdowns are noted in the syslogs. If you've got a bad power supply/cable, the machine would just stop...no logs, nothing. Just down. Replacing network cables only makes sense, if you look at the machine, and you see the lights flashing on it, and see it's obviously up. Getting nothing on the system console is a good indication it's down.

From what you've posted, it's obvious that it's a power issue. Should be easy to diagnose for anyone at your site.

Dear all,
I have gone through the thread, and then only posting my message. I have a similar problem with my system , which is running newly installed CentOS 5.5. previously I was running FC8. No problem was there with the system. But now with CentOS 5.5 , I face following issue.
While working on system , may be after a while [ not after a specific duration] , as single flicker use to come on my display. and after that, the whole system , stalls . The system stalls or hangs [ display remains visible] . I can not click, and even "alt + ctrl + Backspace" [ to restart X server ] does not work.
I tried to ping the system from other terminal , for first few min it used to get ping and I can login to system. But after some time even the network gets down.

Whereas , the display [ desktop ] remains on , and I can see the desktop Icons. I am unable to analyze the reason behind it. Bellow is the output of "tail -f /var/log/messages" which I was running from other system [ logged in using ssh and then kept running tail -f /var/log/messages" ]
If anybody have any clue, please guide.
