Creating my first home server... Help!

hello everyone,

I am needing a home server. I have looked around for different operating systems and microsoft is way over priced for what they offer. Most of my home pc's are either running XP home or pro with the exception on my personal pc I double boot between Ubuntu 6.10 and XP Pro. With the number of pc's I have connecting to the internet and the number of users, I am needing to put in place some type of security with email and file services and was hoping to run a small website for family members who are far away. What I find confusing is the number of choices when using Linux. I do know that linux is more secure then windows operating systems. I am currently DLing Slampp 1.1. And just for the record command line scares hell out of me. hehe :D So, I am basically needing an os for server that will somewhat interface with my windows based pc's. At present I have 6 pc's that all access internet through a network hub into a Linksys wireless router. I did find one heck of a deal on a used server, but no os. It is a Dell Poweredge 2400 with 2 866 Mhz processor's, 256 Mb of ram and 4 scsi drives.

Try to install a LAMP server. This is one of the options the Ubuntu gives you to download and it comes ready to use for Apache/MySQL/PHP. It only took me 15min. for installation. It is command line only but I think you are able to install GUI if scared of a terminal. Good luck! Command line is not that scary!!
