aptitude install build-essential
to install GCC and Make (and others), and then
aptitude install linux-headers-$(uname -r)
Then try installing VMWare again.

Are you sure you want VMWare Player? I prefer VMware Server with VMWare Server Console.

This thread is old, sorry I never replied, I never received an email notification so thought the thread was dead. I would have told you there is an installation script included so you could have installed it, hope you did find your own way of installing it though.

Yeah I use kirramail myself, and it had worked wonderfully for me over the last couple of years. Sorry the download speed was bad, and still is, all I can afford at the time. The site has been down now for the last couple of months, I now have a full time job and find it hard to find time for the project. I have added a few more packages to make the distro much more versatile, and will be looking to have the iso's hosted on a proper hosting server with higher bandwith when I get the project back on track, might be a month or two for that.
