Configuring YUM for automatic updates

Is there a way to set up yum to automatically get updates for Fedora Core 5? Is it even a good idea to automatically get updates on a server that is in a production environment? Also, is it a good idea to exclude certain packages from updating, for example, kernel updates?

Thanks,

1) Yes. Add a cron entry to the server to run "yum update"
2) No. Instead, get it to e-mail you the output of "yum check-update" to remind you to review it and do it yourself
3) Yes. Example - I don't let the system automatically handle updates for packages that are the primary purpose of the server. My PostgreSQL Data Warehouse excludes PostgreSQL. My Intranet server doesn't upgrade apache. I want to do all upgrades manually.

Note: answer 2 and 3 are my opinion only. Some others will no doubt disagree, and other will agree.

I would definitely agree with #3 ... don't leave important
stuff to chance or the whim of a distro maintainer.

Cheers,
