Question Configuring existing EXIM MTA installation to interact with new LDAP server

Greetings,
Please excuse what could be a very stupid question from a relative novice.

I have a server with exim4 running correctly as my MTA.
I have recently setup an LDAP server and would like to use this to manage mail users. I am not very familiar with exim.

All the how-to guides on configuring exim to work with LDAP, talk about configuring a new installation through the make command.
Can somebody point me in the right direction for adjusting an existing installation to work with LDAP, or, is this not possible, and am I required to unistall exim and reinstall as per the guides?

Cheers
