Concurrent users

I've got a lamp solution deployed that I didn't write but I do have root access to the server.

What might be the best way to determine the number of concurrent users accessing this web app throughout the day?

I guess it depends what a user is. You can probably look at active session counts and the likes, but are they different users?? It totally depends on what this application is, and you've said literally nothing about that.

Well, how best to describe the app... I don't know much about it so try not to flog me too badly for being ignorant. It's got a php front end serviced by apache and has mysql housing one database with maybe two or three dozen tables. I'm not sure what kind of data they're inputting. The 'users' that access the app get defined in the database by the application administrator (not me) and they do not have linux accounts per user or anything like that.
