Company website URL resolving to domain name using DNS

Afternoon all,

Hoping someone can help. A bit of background 1st;

We currently run Linux servers with Mac Desktops. We have a server configured running our LDAP, DHCP and DNS.

We have a website (hosted externally), lets call it www.abc.com and our domain name is abc.com. Now our DNS server has been set up with forwarders (8.8.8.8, 192.168.4.123) and accessing external websites is fine. We are also able to access the internal network.

However when we try to access www.abc.com using Safari (other web browsers available) we get "unable to connect to www.abc.com.

I have done a nslookup and get the message "server can't find www.abc.com: NXDOMAIN

but if I do a dig@www.abc.com I get the info concerning the IP address of the website.

Our /etc/resolv.conf shows the nameservers correctly

Does any one have any ideas. I have tried a number of suggestions that I've seen but nothing has seemed to work.

Many thanks in advance.
Ian

Usually you will need two zones in your DNS. The public internet looking up hosts should see only the externally visible sites. The internally facing DNS server needs to have both the external and internal sites, meaning the external sites need to be repeated. If it claims to be authoritative for the domain, then it will not forward any requests for the domain, it will return NXDOMAIN instead.
