Removing and re-installing software, or installing other software,
for fear of properly configuring a service never is the answer with Linux.

Debugging firewall rules is easy intersperse "-j LOG" rules and watch /var/log/messages or watch rule counters increment (or not ;p) using
Code:
watch -n 1 "/sbin/iptables -n --line-numbers -t filter -L -v -x | grep ^[0-9] | sort -bgrk 2"
Fixing SELinux problems usually is easy too: grep /var/log/messages for setroubleshoot messages and act on them. SELinux has improved considerably over the years and by default tutorials or replies that advertise disabling SELinux before doing anything else are often outdated or the product of the misinformed or the lazy.

What type of connection (bridged versus shared connection) does the VMware guest use?
What firewall rules ('/sbin/iptables-save > /tmp/fwrules.log' and attach plain text "/tmp/fwrules.log") does the VMware guest use?

If "connect_from_port_20=NO" is set in vsftpd.conf then it forces PASV mode, so check your configuration file.
