centOS 5 and router problems

im trying to run cent OS 5 (server) on a old PC of mine, it has a 750 amd with 256 megs ram and a 30 gig hard drive in it. i got it installed but i dont know if its a linux problem or a router problem. when i try putting in the IP address of the server, i get a "timed out" error.

i set up my router for port fowarding and it still messes up all the time.

Is the firewall on? Check it with system-config-securitylevel

Also check the "low level" stuff first...can you ping it? can you ping the default gateway?

In addition, If you enter http://localhost/ in the browser on the server itself a default page should be displayed. If not apache may not be started or not set to automatically start at boot. If you can not access the server from another computer on your LAN then as already suggested the firewall is blocking requests. The router will only be a factor when trying to access the server outside your LAN.
