Buying guide for Linux (Ubuntu) server for VPN, Webserver and Mediaserver

Hello,

I'm looking for advice on buying a server to do a variety of things.

First thing is of course to run Linux, and preferably Ubuntu.

The following should be possible:

A. VPN
To use it as a VPN for anonymous browsing the web

B. Webserver
Used as a build server as described here. I should be able to push to that build server on a different machine.

Then the following web servers:
1. Node, Express, Mongo DB
2. Apache, Mysql, Php

And hobby with a Docker setup.

C. Media server
Use it to stream movies using for example Plesk.

Search so far

My guess is that I will need to purchase a server station with multiple slots for hard disks. On that, I will use VM's for the different configurations.

Examples are the Synology DSS418J or a DS418. Price then seems to be around $ 1000,- for both the case and drives.

And I was wondering if that is the right approach, where the software of the Synology manages the disks, and you have Linux running on the disks separately. Or isn't that how this works and is it customary to install Linux on the Synology device and in that sense would any other service suffice?

Do you have some advice?

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.

While a Synology NAS by itself is quite capable of being a media server, web server, VPN and much more so unless your looking for something that is specifically low power and depending on your experience level it might be easier with a regular server PC versus an embedded device.

I don't know how easy or practical or if it is possible to replace the Synology operating system and so would will leave it in place and run a VM machine for those services that are more difficult to setup or won't work on the NAS itself.
