Boot loader on CD or USB

hi,
I have a simple question. Can I have my boot loader (grub or lilo) only on CD or usb device and the rest of the partition on HD. Having my computer never boot?

Thank you,

Yes the boot loader may be anywhere that your system will boot. May I ask why do you want to? Grub or lilo are small and take up very little room compared to the size of most hds or memory.

I do run grub in a separate partition and chainload my os which it still has to have a boot loader inside the partition.
