/boot/efi and Suse Linux Enterprise 11
Hi,
I am trying to install Suse Linux Enterprise edition 11 SP2 on a server which has UEFI bios ( quite a latest server). So when i boot this server with SUSE linux Media, installer creates a partition /boot/efi by default ( type shows as vfat). I never saw a VFAT partition on linux ( normally raiserfs or ext2 or ext3 for /boot), but this seems different and installer does not allow me to go for any other partition type other than vfat. When i selected expert partitioning option ( as i have to create some LVM partitions as well ) , there is no vfat option available for /boot/efi so i had to go for FAT. Questions are: 1. What is the difference between VFAT and FAT? 2. Does FAT a good choice for linux oS like Suse Enterprise ... why they went for FAT for elilo? 3. Is the selection of FAT OK for /boot/efi? I am concerned but does not have any option to go for VFAT ( by the way what is linux partition type number for VFAT)? Thanks in advance for help |
what is telling you it is a fat format ?
the /boot ( sda1) suse11 uses is ext3 i would check to make 100% sure that there are not already formated partitions or partitions that YOU did not make /boot -- ext3 the rest on a server LVM the default "should " set up a standard everyday server layout |
Hi John,
It could not be aalready formatted partition ... becuase i created a new hardware RAID... it is all new setup. It seems to me that for UEFI enabled systems , Suse is creating /boot/efi partition with VFAT format....and this was quite surprising choice for me...
