Thanks

So enabling 'wins support = Yes' and restarting samba on both the laptop and the server didn't fix it. I have not disabled it yet.

I see that in the /etc/samba directory on the server there is an zero bite file named dhcp.conf. Would it be helpful to put something in it?

Opp's I had both linux machines set up to be the wins server. Changed the line in the laptop to 'wins server = 192.168.0.1' and now I am able to connect between the two from both directions.

However I am still unable to connect to the wife's machine which is running xp.

Thanks

Thanks JimBass

Some how I have not been getting my email notice that there has been a new post. So my last post does not reflect the info from your last post. I did click the link in the last email this time. Maybe that will fix it.

Thanks

Thanks

OK. I found out why I was unable to connect to the wife's machine when it was booted into xp. Apparently there is a case sensitive thing going on with xp.

The other desktop the one with win98, I have never been able to connect to it from my laptop. As I remember what I have read there is a password encryption thing that has to be accounted for when dealing with that generation of windows?

Thanks

I don't support windows, so I can't tell you anything about a problem with older versions of it. Once upon a time I used Win98 and used it well, but I graduated from win-world quite some time ago, and don't look back upon it fondly! Also, I never used SAMBA while I used both OSes simultaneously.

You say you can't "connect" to the WIN98 box. I can't very well help you troubleshoot something I don't understand - what does connect mean? Ping by short name? Find in network neighborhood, look at its webpage? See its shared files? Posting error messages would be much more helpful for us (and therefore you) than something non-specific like "I can't connect."

Peace,
JimBass

Thanks JimBass

Please excuse my rambling on, it helps me put things in perspective and sometimes leads me to the solution to my problem.

OK. The reason I didn't post the errors is that I booted it into Etch (still a testing version) to make some changes to grub and set up samba on it. I ended up updating it, been a long time since I set this box up as a cluster controller, hence the name, but I didn't know enough at the time and so it has been sitting for quite some time. Anyway, I think it had to update every package on the box before it was done, some 1260 or so packages. Took awhile, and it still needs a lot of unnecessary packages uninstalled. Now it is a fully up-to-date stable version of Etch.

I must be doing something wrong. I am right back where I was with the other boxes. When I 'smbclient -L controler' form the laptop or server I get
Code:
Error connecting to 63.251.179.32 (Connection refused)
Connection to controler failed (Error NT_STATUS_CONNECTION_REFUSED)
:~$
I very carefully made the smb.conf file like the one on the laptop except for the shares section. I am able to ping it. Smb4k on that desktop shows all the boxes and I am able to connect to them.

The only thing I have not done on 'controler' is set up samba users. But I thought that with 'security = SHARE' that was a non-issue.

The above may not mean anything. After a reboot on the laptop I am able to connect to 'controler'. The only issue is that I have to put the name in, in uppercase. I don't have that issue with the server or the laptop. So why are some requiring only uppercase and some don't care which?

I am not able to connect to RBEES(XP) from 'controler' but I can from the other boxes. For some reason 'server' is not able to resolve 'RBEES' when asked by 'controler' but is able to when asked by 'kingbee' and 'server'

I know what you mean. I don't use it myself, or any other version for that matter, unless I am forced into it. Normally when my wonderful wife, my son, or someone I know needs one fixed. Although vista is installed on my laptop it hasn't been booted into it since I don't know when. Some day I will get around to reclaiming the drive space it is using.

I figured as much. I did think someone else following this thread might have some insite. Also if there is some command for windows that is similar to 'smbclient'?

My son is home form school and has booted the desktop back into win98. When I 'smbclient -L C8Q7A5' (someday I'll get around to changing that into a name that makes sense) I get:
Code:
e:~$ smbclient -L C8Q7A5
Password:

	Sharename Type Comment
	--------- ---- -------
cli_rpc_pipe_open: cli_nt_create failed on pipe \srvsvc to machine C8Q7A5. Error was ERRSRV - ERRerror (Non-specific error code.)
	D Disk
	C Disk
IPC$ IPC Remote Inter Process Communication

	Server Comment
	--------- -------

	Workgroup Master
	--------- -------
:~$
The shares are listed in this output, but through smb4k I am not able to see them, I can however see the box. I see that there is some kind of error but it does not mean anything to me.

Once again

Thank for all the help.
