best kernel for i686 server

Hello all,

Can anyone recommend the best kernel to use for a machine with a 686 processor? I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 as a LAMP server with no GUI. The current server kernel does not support my 686 processor.

I imagine most people would agree that the best kernel to run would be one built for your specific hardware and requirements. Failing that, whatever the latest kernel package your particular distribution offers is more than likely going to be the best option (assuming there isn't some quirk with your particular hardware configuration in the latest kernel build).

I haven't used that version of Ubuntu, but older versions certainly did. Well, I suppose it depends on what you mean by 'support'; I mean 'works perfectly well with' (although you could even quibble about 'works', I suppose, if you were of the quibbling sort).

What is the designation of the kernel? what makes you say that it doesn't support the 686? How much RAM do you have?
