If you want to edit any files owned by root you must be root. Or use sudo.

In Debian sudo is installed by default but your username has not been added yet. But when you installed Debian, you had to choose a root password which is different from your user password.

In XFCE, open a terminal. Enter 'su' command and enter the root password. Then open en edit the file using the nano editor.
