barebones backups

I'm trying to backup just the various configurations on a lot of different servers and have a few questions.

Since I don't want to backup the data, just the configurations, where would you start. I'm thinking /etc/ and thats about it.

what software are you using or are you just using stuff like ribs and rsync?

has anyone seen a comprehensive guild to all of this around?

Thanks

Certainly /etc, and possibly /usr/local if you compile much yourself.

The greatest backup program in the world is free from sourceforge, and it is absolutely brilliant. http://backuppc.sourceforge.net and download away. It allows you to backup through tar, rsyncd, ssh+rsync, and samba if you need it. I backup our entire company's servers through rsyncd, and the guy before me did it with rsync+ssh, all with backuppc.

Peace,
JimBass
