Application Server
I am trying to make an application server that would contain simple ones like edit, openoffice, gimp, so on and so forth.
I know how to access these using ssh but what I want is that the application runs on that server as it already does, but to open local files and save them locally.
thank you

Can you explain more of what you are exactly trying to set up? Can't you just install the programs you need on your laptop or such?

The application server is for the home. It contains basic applications that are accessible to the other machines including Windows and Linux. I don't save anything on the application server because all files will be saved on the local machine.

Isn't that defeating the purpose of the server then?

Instead of having an OpenOffice or GIMP on every machine(not laptops), the server is used for this purpose of being central. If I need to add a new machine, I don't need to reinstall these applications but just connect to the server.
This server has no home partition for the client machines because the home is the IP address of the client machines.

Well you could use ssh with X forwarding, but without copying the files to the server to edit, you have no other way to save files on your local machine, due to being connected to a remote server. That's why I originally said about defeating the purpose of having a server....

I give the local machine a share folder that is also part of the server's home folder.
This worked.

Then there you go. Pretty much the same thing as hosting your files on the server... And if you figured everything out, please mark your thread as solved, thanks.
