apache - php: a single directory with fastcgi

Hi!

I bet this is possible and perhaps someone has a simple recipe (or a pointer to article that has a simple recipe) on how to do it. I Have this server running php 5.2 (we are in the slow process of migrating our systems to later versions) and I'd like to test the application running on a different php from the one the server is running.

The server is using mod-php5 from packages (a lucid ubuntu server). I'd like to test the application on a different php version (a hacked php that I could hand-compile) and I know it's possible to use fastcgi to use a different version. I just want the short recipe of how to do it just on a single directory of the server.

Thanks in advance.

I'm looking around in the meantime.

I know it's not the answer you're looking for, but could you not just run {apache + updated PHP + copy of server data} within a virtualization and test it there? Possibly safer too rather than expose your live server.

I think nowadays there's no need to use fastcgi, if you can run a native module like mod_fcgid. A few weeks ago I was playing with fastcgi but I found its configuration not so straightforward if you want to use it in many different virtual domains.
At that time I wrote this notes http://notes.sagredo.eu/node/151 concerning the problem of running two php versions on the same apache web server with mod_fcgid
