Maybe your server does not accept symlinks - as it should work the way trickykid said. You can set a FollowSymlinks
directive in the httpd.conf for the directory the application resides in or the default directory. (or am i wrong??) this way you are much better off than testing mod_rewrite...
Well like he mentioned, it does work with the index file as expected but this is normal behaviour he's seeing if someone didn't code the php site in a more manageable way. If clicking on any links from the index page results in the url changing back, that means the previous path is hard coded within the pages, instead of possibly the code using the url to navigate, etc. Crappy code, unless you do want to rewrite it, you most likely are better off with mod_rewrite. But why all the trouble just to change the name of the URL?

Can you give me more information how to do it? Also I think the server supports the symlinks. I did create one. When I was typing /newsite instead of /full_php_blablabla it worked. Everything was good in the browser, etc... BUT it was only on the first page. The rest of the website is hard coded. So when you click on smth - it has a link to old destanation - in /full_php_blablabla.

Sorry for the mistake. I just thought that it wouldn't be that much of a help...
Anyway this is what it writes when I uncomment the last 2 lines -
Syntax error on line 989 of /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf:
Invalid command 'LoadModule', perhaps mis-spelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration.
Everything was working. It was just that this stupid IE had it all cached. :-)))) That's why it was showing old URLs :-((( Spent 2 full days figuring out what was the problem. :-)
I've solved the problem so far. But one thing still bothers me. My conf file. Is everything OK with it? Because I couldn't activate mod_rewrite module. From my previous experience I know. If something is not working when you don't need it - it will be very difficult to make it work when you do need it :-)
In case u do need it u will find out simply because u have to and cant stop before - but i think this case is not very likely this time. It is much more likely that caching of browsers will confuse u quite often in the future because this is a continuous source of irritation working on web development...
learn to love it ;-)
