Apache 2 Global public_html directives

I would like to use one Directory directive within the global apache config that will apply auth settings to all home directories. I have the global setup which works for Indexes, etc. Is it possible to set a global .htaccess file for them too? I am unable to find information on this, please advise.

It is easy (and preferred) to do authentication in the main configuration files. Just put the desired parameters in a <Directory> section.

The only issue is if you do not allow your web server admins root access to the system, and want them to be able to alter their own site configuration. I recommend neither because of security concerns, and most webmasters wouldn't need such access anyway (IMHO).

Best of luck.
