actually httpd.conf in Debian is a blank file...but here is the apache2.conf

#
# Based upon the NCSA server configuration files originally by Rob McCool.
#
# This is the main Apache server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.1/> for detailed information about
# the directives.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# The configuration directives are grouped into three basic sections:
# 1. Directives that control the operation of the Apache server process as a
# whole (the 'global environment').
# 2. Directives that define the parameters of the 'main' or 'default' server,
# which responds to requests that aren't handled by a virtual host.
# These directives also provide default values for the settings
# of all virtual hosts.
# 3. Settings for virtual hosts, which allow Web requests to be sent to
# different IP addresses or hostnames and have them handled by the
# same Apache server process.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "/var/log/apache2/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "" will be interpreted by the
# server as "//var/log/apache2/foo.log".
#

### Section 1: Global Environment
#
# The directives in this section affect the overall operation of Apache,
# such as the number of concurrent requests it can handle or where it
# can find its configuration files.
#

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# NOTE! If you intend to place this on an NFS (or otherwise network)
# mounted filesystem then please read the LockFile documentation (available
# at <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.1/mod/mpm_common.html#lockfile>);
# you will save yourself a lot of trouble.
#
# Do NOT add a slash at the end of the directory path.
#
ServerRoot "/etc/apache2"

#
# The accept serialization lock file MUST BE STORED ON A LOCAL DISK.
#
#<IfModule !mpm_winnt.c>
#<IfModule !mpm_netware.c>
LockFile /var/lock/apache2/accept.lock
#</IfModule>
#</IfModule>

#
# PidFile: The file in which the server should record its process
# identification number when it starts.
#
PidFile /var/run/apache2.pid

#
# Timeout: The number of seconds before receives and sends time out.
#
Timeout 300

#
# KeepAlive: Whether or not to allow persistent connections (more than
# one request per connection). Set to "Off" to deactivate.
#
KeepAlive On

#
# MaxKeepAliveRequests: The maximum number of requests to allow
# during a persistent connection. Set to 0 to allow an unlimited amount.
# We recommend you leave this number high, for maximum performance.
#
MaxKeepAliveRequests 100

#
# KeepAliveTimeout: Number of seconds to wait for the next request from the
# same client on the same connection.
#
KeepAliveTimeout 15

# Note 2: The example entries below illustrate that in some cases
# the two character 'Language' abbreviation is not identical to
# the two character 'Country' code for its country,
# E.g. 'Danmark/dk' versus 'Danish/da'.
#

Did you edit /etc/apache2/sites-available/default by chance? If it's a fresh install, that's where Apache will be pulling the site settings from.

Can you post the /etc/apache2/site-available/default file if you can't spot any errors?

Also, can you paste the exact error that Apache is giving you?

Thanks!

Sure the error is as follows: savage:~# apache2ctl restart
apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName

So I have an outside connection that should work IE my website is http://anick.users.game-sat.com however with this new server it says it cannot find it when I try to view the page.

typing http://127.0.0.1 works on the local machine.as well as looking at the machine on the LAN I have the IP forwarding on port 80 in the router so I know that isn't the issue.

the Sites-available/default is as follows and I have not touched it yet.

If you're able to reach the site from your LAN, then I'm thinking that the problem is with your external connection. Do you think it's possible that your ISP does not allow incoming connections on port 80?

Try changing the listening port to something high like 8888 with these instructions:

http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-a...ort-ipbinding/

Then try to access your site by going to http://anick.users.game-sat.com:8888

I know my ISP Provider allows port 80 since I have a identical machine serving a website. I have checked settings on the first machine and the new one and everything is identical that I know of.

Still, though, if you can access the website from another PC on your LAN (behind your router), that makes me believe that the problem is either at the router or on your incoming connection. Maybe I just misunderstand which PCs can actually access the website.

OK, if you run the following command, what is the result:

Code:
netstat -nap | grep apache
On my webserver, I get:

Code:
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:80 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 18436/apache2
Meaning that Apache is listening on all interfaces (0.0.0.0). Does your show something different?

I get

tcp6 0 0 :::80 :::* LISTEN 3990/apache2
tcp6 0 0 :::8888 :::* LISTEN 3990/apache2

so the issue might be the fact that IPv6 is listening not IPv4 so how did this happen and how do we fix it?

Hi,

I'm sorry, just to clarify:

You mentioned that with other computers behind your router on your LAN, you are able to connect to this webserver, right?

That is correct. The LAN computer can see the default webpage no problem when I type http://serversipaddress
sshd also is having an issue as well so I don't know if the two are linked or not.
wondering if it is a setup issue.

It appears though the GUI netstat that Apache isn't listening on IPv4 port 80 at all.. The Httpd.conf is empty. it appears that is correct as I am running debian etch.
