Apache/1.3.34 Server - Forbidden 403 error

I'm new to the Linux/Apache world and I'm hoping someone can help me with a permissions problem I'm having with Apache. First and foremost, I installed Apache into Ubuntu 7.04 by using the apt-get install apache command. Everything installed properly and I could access the default Apache page at localhost/index.html. I then replaced the default index.html file with a photo album I created. It's index.html file is located at /var/www/index.html and displays properly. However the images and thumbnails are in sub directories under /var/www (such as /var/www/slides/). When I click on an image I get the following error.

You don't have permission to access /slides/photo shoot 087.html on this server.

Apache/1.3.34 Server at Port 80

I've read tons of forums on editing the httpd.conf file and possibly adding a .htaccess file, but I believe I don't need any .htaccess files and below is what I have in my httpd.conf file...

DocumentRoot /var/www

<Directory />
Options SymLinksIfOwnerMatch
AllowOverride None

<Directory /var/www/>
Options None
AllowOverride None
Order allow,deny
Allow from all

I look forward to any help, thanks!!!

did you check the permissions of the sub dirs at filesystem level?

I haven't, but I assumed (yes, bad idea) that because the http://localhost/index.html page I created displays that the sub folders would inherit the same permissions. I just checked and noticed though that my httpd.conf file also contains the following 2 lines...

User www-data
Group www-data

Could this or does this have a bearing on the permissions?
