Question Any Problems In Transfer/Upgrade MediaWiki From Apple To Linux

Greetings:

I've been asked to upgrade and transfer an old version (1.9.3) of MediaWiki from an Apple platform to a new version (1.16.X) on a Linux (Ubuntu) platform.

Restrictions:

I cannot upgrade then transfer nor can I transfer then upgrade.
It's supposed to be an import of old MediaWiki data into a new MediaWiki install.

Can anyone foresee any problems?

Will this go smoothly or will this be a screaming eye-clawing nightmare?

PS: Yes, I know to backup everything, before I do anything.

Should be pretty straight forward, except 1.9.3 is pretty old, that would likely be the only problem in the migration/upgrade process.

But, you're likely better off migrating then upgrading. If the database has changed drastically since 1.9.3, you might find just the data import might not work so well. Read mediawiki's docs/upgrade procedures though, perhaps contacting someone from mediawiki for guidance is your best bet.

May I ask, why can't you upgrade before or afterwards?

Office politics.
2 labs using same server.
My lab is OK with me having full run of the machine.
The other lab... well... office politics.
And while everyone is OK with a package-manager install of software, compiling from source worries other people.
"boo hoo hoo, why can't we do this on Apple" sort of thing....

I am in the middle of attempting to get full run of the system by doing an end run around the low-stakes treachery. So, I'm looking for contingency plans.
