Does anyone know of a good DNS server?
I have heard of TinyDNS and Bind9.
I have also heard a lot about PowerDNS.
I personally thought of PowerDNS because of it stores records in Mysql.
The only thing is that i cannot find a good frontend for powerDNS.
And I don't have enough time to build a frontpanel myself.
And ofcourse a professional/opensource frontend is better as it is tested/used by lots of people. So a lot of suggestions/improvements
I would really appreciate if someone could kindly give some advise/suggestion on this?
Depends on what you want to do, I use bind exclusively at home and at work. TinyDNS is fine as well. Never heard of powerDNS, but as you point out the more eyes on i the better, which is why I use bind.
Do the world a favor and just run Bind. It's secure, it's stable and it won't give you any problems once it's up and running. My previous employer used TinyDNS, I absolutely hate that piece of shit. It's just as bad as qmail (written/created by same guy). The only good thing with TinyDNS is the ease of configuration of records, that's it. I'd rather use /etc/hosts than TinyDNS again..
bind is notoriously insecure..
Thought I believe bind 9 had a lot of improvements in that area.
Don't believe the Microsoft reports.
Most of the time bind is insecure due to the administrator running it. Anyone can really say everything is insecure unless the machine is simply turned off and locked away, that's the only real security. Linux itself is insecure depending on the admin running the show.
