Amavisd Running - Amavis-milter is Not

I noticed that I have amavisd on my email server and it appears to be running and working however it shows the following:

Code:
[root@mail ~]# service amavisd status
amavisd (pid 25761 25760 25759 25758 25755) is running...
amavis-milter is stopped
I tried restarting amavisd and nothing changed. Why is amavis-milter stopped?

Is this important in order for amavisd-new to function?

Well, it depends on what MTA you run. If you run sendmail, then I believe the answer is yes.

Try looking at your mail log after you do a restart of amavisd to see what it says about any failure to start amavis-milter.

Are you sure you don't have to start amavis-milter on it's own (as opposed to expecting amavisd to start it)? I use postfix, so I don't use the milter.

Ah - I checked the the amavisd-new mailing list and was told that my specific MTA (Postfix) does not use this and is normally expected to be not running.

Thanks for the reply!
