alternate home directory on NIS client.

Folks,
I have an NFS mount on the NIS client that I want to use as the home directory for all NIS users logging in, but I also want to retain the original /home directory for system users and root on the same client.

The NFS mount is /nishome, and when I defined the NIS user on the the NIS server, I identified this mountpoint as the NIS users' home directory. This same NFS mount is mounted on the NIS server as well.

Any ideas?

Any ideas about what? As I read it you sound like you're doing fine...? All that matters is the relevant users posix account data contains the home dir you want, there's nothing special about the home filesystem itself.

When I login to the nisuser account from the client, it's telling me that the /home/nisuser directory doesn't exist on that server. Which is true. I don't *want* it to exist on that server. I want it to mount on /nishome/nisuser. I want to reserve /home for system admins.

When I create /home/nisuser, the login on the client goes without a hitch.

What does
Code:
ypcat passwd
show on the client? Maybe you have to rebuilt the tables on the nis-server with
Code:
make -C /var/yp
It should show the path to the /nishome/<user> you want to use.

well then as above, the posix details aren't valid. it will take that from the passwd entry for the user, so the nis server is giving out the wrong data.
