After Debian upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze, MySQL will not start

I just upgraded from Debian Lenny to Debian Squeeze. The upgrade went pretty smoothly. After the upgrade, MySQL does not start at boot time. When I try to start it manually by typing

sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start

it prints .............................failed!

I tried using aptitude to reinstall mysql-server-5.1, but it gave me an error message:
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Any idea what I can try?

I did a quick Google on this, and found a Debian forum post that may be helpful.

Problem solved

This problem is now solved. There were actually multiple problems. First, mysql-server-5.1 was not completely configured. Secondly, I had to comment out a line in my.cnf that says skip-bdb. Third, I had to run mysql_upgrade.

Thank you to everyone who helped!
