adding website to server

I am attempting to transfer my webpage to my server through ssh. I connect and access var/www and then I see the defaul index.html file. I cant delete the file or store my personal index.html file there. I get permission denied.

you need to change to a user which has the appropriate rights then, e.g. root. "sudo -i" should do the trick. Alternatively, change the owner of the apache files to your user,
