aberrant quotas pop-up on an NFS partition

Hello everyone!

Distro: Slackware 11
Context: File server offering "/home" through NFS and authentication via NIS

I have strange problems with the quotas on this server. Let's break them in two:

1) Quotas for deleted users (using: userdel MyUserThatShouldDisappear), whose files have been deleted as well, keep showing up when I do
repquota -vau
The system seems to keep quotas for hundreds of such ghost users. And yes, they appear to have 0 used blocks and 0 nodes. And no, they do not show up in /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow.

[edit]I have forgotten to mention that those "ghost" users are not listed by their login by repquota, only user ID number appears. Here is a typical entry for a deleted user:

#12556 -- 0 50000 60000 0 9000 9500
2) Some valid users sometimes experience a change in their quotas without any intervention from me.

Normal settings:
soft: 50000 hard: 60000

Which sometimes change to either:
soft: 5000 hard: 5000
soft: 3700589557 hard: 1006771724

Now, if you have any hint about what's going on, I'd be grateful.
