A Linux 2.4 distribution?

Hi everyone. The question is in the subject of the topic: I need a distribution with a Linux kernel 2.4 for a LAMP. Are there good and newer distros w/ 2.4?

I'm sorry for my bad english. Regards.

Slackware 10.x, if I remember correctly.

It's available on most Slackware mirrors.

The latest is Slackware 11. The (2011) updates :

ftp://ftp.slackware.org.uk/slackware...ches/packages/

Slackware 11 has kernel 2.4.33.
ISO ftp://ftp.slackware.org.uk/slackware...ware-11.0-iso/

..

CentOS 3

You won't find a "new" distro with Linux kernel 2.4.

Why do you need 2.4 for LAMP? LAMP works better with 2.6.

Hi nicolunacba,

I know that the current versions of apache, mysql and php all
run well on a 2.6 kernel. Is there something specific that
you require? Typically people would need a specific version
of php, since the kernel, apache and mysql are all backwards
compatible. If you need a certain version of php, the version
of the kernel doesn't matter.

Thank you very much everybody. I'll read about the distributions that you have recommended me. Slackware is and always will be my favorite, but an rpm based system such as CentOS is really interesting.

I have to work with a really old piece of hardware (if not obsolete). Long time no mount a server on GNU / Linux. When I had my server running, I did it on Linux 2.4 and I got good results.
Now I use Ubuntu, Debian and openSUSE on my desktop computers and Linux 2.6 works wonderfully.
But these are modern computers. My fear is that Linux 2.6 makes it run slower.
Regards.

If anything, the 2.6 kernel should make it run faster.

Is it at least a 486 processor? If so, I would definitely
recommend using a distro with a 2.6 kernel.

Without knowing the hardware specifications (RAM, CPU etc) of your computer it is difficult to say since the definition of really old varies greatly. Its not necessarily the kernel version that would cause the computer to slow down. If you use a lightweight windows manager or not even use one if a GUI is not required would help performance with older computers.

I don't remember it now because it's not here (I'll have it back in a week I hope), maybe it's a set of Pentium III processors. It's old, but I like it :P I'll not use a GUI, just terminal and SSH access.

Well, with Pentium 3 processors you can use any recent distribution without problems. I would also recommend Slackware, but go for 13.37.

I have CentOS 5.6 running on a PIII 256 MB RAM right now. It's a little slow loading Gnome, but it works just fine. Plays audio perfectly; haven't tested video. I've also run Slack v. 12 on the same box with no issues.
