[Debian Squeeze] ownCloud 5 - Groups and security

Hi,

So I have a ownCloud 5 on a Debian Squeeze and I was wondering what the group are for?

The only link I have found is this one:
https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Own...Administration
Quote:

2. Groups
Displays the current security groups that each user ID is a member. Note that the "admin" user has an
"admin" security group? Other user IDs can be members of this group but it is not a recommended practice.
When a user ID has "Groups" shown, there is no security group assigned to the user ID as seen by the
"test" user. With the "Groups" setting a user is confined to accessing only their data.
3. Group Admin
A user ID can be given "elevated privileges" where the security changes within the scope of the user ID
can be performed. Such as; changing user quota, password, creating a new user ID. When creating a new
user, the ID is setup for the current security group, the new user ID will also appear on the main
"admin" user list. When the "Group Admin" setting exists no group administrator is assigned.
Can anyone make this clear for me? How should I create my users? With what group? I'm confused and I see no official documentation about it :/.

At the same time, if you guys have good link for ownCloud security, it would be great :).

I use ownCloud ONLY to make user share file with poeple outside of our network (In https of course).

(Sorry for my english by the way).
Thanks a lot.

The link you posted says:

Code:

3. Groups
This dropdown field is used for creating new ownCloud Security Groups. New or existing groups can be associated
can be associated at this point with a new user ID about the be "Create"d. If a new group is created from this
field is can be associated with existing user IDs further down on the User settings screen.

or is your concern about something else?

Securing it from what?

Thanks for the answer.

I don't understand how ownCloud manage groups and I don't understand what admin groups is.
For instance, I created a group call "users". Okay, cool, now what... !?

The wierd thing is there NOTHING about "groups" in the documentation and this is why i'm asking here my question...

Hope it helps and thanks for your helps!

It seems to be that they have explicitly modeled the security after the Linux example.

Make a non-god-mode group.
Make a god-mode group.
Added regular-joe account to and from both and test each.

Create a "remote" group and transfer "employees". It can be amusing.

How was it installed? apt-get or a manual install?

"You’ve probably noticed that the latest ownCloud now includes a Group Admin feature. We added this feature so admins could create users to manage the membership in one or many groups. Now, group admins have the same user management rights as administrators over a specified group, with the exception that they can’t access system settings. And, of course, they can’t override corporate directory usernames and passwords."

Hi,

Sorry for the delay :
Code:

wget http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/isv:/ownCloud:/community/Debian_6.0/all/owncloud_5.0.4-0_all.deb
dpkg -i owncloud_5.0.4-0_all.deb

I read that other software use that "approach" too, so that maybe we'll find some documentation, somewhere, someday?

Thanks for your reply by the way.
