xdm access for a new user

hi.how do i give xdm(x display manager) access to a user.

this is how i tried:
->created a new group
->added two new users to this group
->chgrp group1 /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm
->chmod 710 /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm

this procedure worked fine for ftp,telnet,finger and rsh.
but after running the above program,i logon with the new user and type xdm there.then i get the message as 'only root
wants to run xdm'.

how do i get xdm access for my new user?

xdm should only really ever be run through runlevel 4 - that is the multi-user-login runlevel.

If someone is logged in at another runlevel, then startx is what they will use, not xdm.

xdm is nothing but a login screen, basically, so either use it as a login screen (by running under runlevel 4) or start X directly ... all xdm does is start X sessions from a graphical login.
