Will a new router increase security- hardware firewall?
Ive got about a 5 year old router and using a hardware firewall. Would purchasing a new router increase security as far as the hardware firewall goes?
My thinking is that a new router would have a newer type of firewall, is that correct?....

It depends upon what protocols your router uses. If it includes SPI (stateful packet inspection), it's probably good enough for home use. Just check your logs to see what's happening. And I can't really say for sure, but it might be helpful to include what you're using and how in your posts.

it will give your internal computers a non routable ip, so they safe aslong as you dont forward unsafe ports from your router to them... set up nat etc and still deploy hostbased security for each of your internal computers.... and make sure you always update your routers ios if it is possible..

Like chinaman said, check what type of firewall it is. Also the older the software the more of a chance of all the holes are found/patched, and the newer the software the bugs are not as well known.
Check online for how secure your router is, and what known problems they have.
