Why don't certain things show up on ps?


Hi Guys.. when I run ps, it doesn't show things like inetd and my webserver.. why's that? Thanks, and sorry if this is a stupid question.

if you run the commands:
Code:
ps -ef | grep inet
ps -ef | grep httpd
and the processes do not show up then they are NOT running.

are you typing just ps or have you tried ps -aux. with ps -aux it should show all processes running. Also you can try top which will show all the processes running.

You can also do a list open file instead of a ps.

try:

lsof -i | grep httpd

or

lsof | grep httpd
lsof | grep inet


If it doesn't show up then it's not in memory.
