Which logs/commands should be checked to monitor network security & access


Information such as...programs accessing what ports, ip addresses, login attempts & failures etc

On most distros, /var/log/messages and /var/log/secure. Some use /var/log/authlog (or auth.log) too. Why don't you check your /etc/syslog.conf file to see where authpriv is being logged. If you want to check what's listening on a particular port, use netstat. There are a number of other very good tools -- check the sticky at the top of this forum and use Google.
