which encryption should I use, gpg?

I never encrypted anything in Linux before.
I'd like to encrypt a directory in my system and to keep it protected except when accessing its contents a number of times a day (one to ten times per day).
Can gpg encrypt full directories in one go from the command line? Is there any way to prevent being prompted for the passphrase if I decrypt directories that I encrypted earlier?
Thank you.

Using GPG for this application will be cumbersome. It would be better to use an encrypted filesystem.

cryptoloop

Thank you, I'll take a look. Btw, that link is an article readable by registered users to the site only. I'm not sure that I can copy and paste its content here but I'll paste the links the article offers:
You can find a lot more information in the article “Building a Linux Filesystem From an Ordinary File” (http://freshmeat.net/articles/view/1387/), the Disk Encryption FAQ (http://www.hackfaq.org/disk-encrypt.shtml), the Cryptoloop HOWTO (http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Cryptoloop-HOWTO/), the Disk Encryption HOWTO (http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Disk-Encryption-HOWTO/), and the article “A Structured Approach to Hard Disk Encryption” (http://www.sdc.org/~leila/usb-dongle/readme.html).

Registration is free, and if you don't trust Linux Magazine you can use Bugmenot.

A number of links above are broken but the article at linux-mag is fine. Thanks again.
