This was at /var/log/messages

I am veryfing apache error log, and have identified other attempts.

The root invocations whwre from myself. During the past two weeks I have been receiving lot of attempt through ssh. I have taken provisions like adding the IPs to iptables among other security measures that include chmod 700 /usr/bin/wget

I have a question, when I log into the server trough a normal user and invoke -su, I am NOT being able to add rules to iptables. I receive something like command not found. Have been my server compromised?

it's quite an old buffer overflow rpc.statd exploit, upgrade the rpc.statd package to be sure, but you'll be safe now. alternatively if you're not using NIS / NFS or anything else using portmap. stop it running in the first place.
