I haven't run SuSE in awhile, but when I did I found the default susefirewall2 to be pretty effective. It did have some odd quirks like with the ident port and it was a pain to manually configure without using the GUI. If you are thinking about using something else, then what are you looking for? Something that is simplistic yet effective? Has a fancy interactive GUI that let's you see stuff? Etc?

i would recommend iptables. It is pretty standard across all linux distros. Also it is very secure in my opinion

Just to clarify, susefirewall2 (as well as any other option I mention) all use iptables. Some are just iptables scripts while others are graphical frontends for manipulating iptables.

How about shorewall. It has predefined configuration for 1, 2, and 3 interfaces systems and text file or Webmin
configuration.

I agree with gruby12
I use shorewall on my suse 10.1 box, and manage with webmin. The www.webmin.com website has an excellent shorewall configuration help document.

firewall GUI
try guarddog - i found that very intuitive for a beginner (but as i recall, and it's a fair while now, you have to give some SuSE specific arguments during install - to do with /path/to/KDE in SuSE which i think is 'non standard')
http://www.simonzone.com/software/guarddog/#download
or firewall builder - again nice and easy GUI but a bit more complex IMHO. there is a wizard too
http://www.fwbuilder.org/
i've used this on a gnome build and was good

If you have an extra old computer lying around give smoothwall a try. It can run on a PII and 128 meg of ram effectively.
If you can get an old computer, shorewall is my second choice.
